Past months are estimated from the balances you've recorded plus the transactions imported around them — the more of each account's statements you've imported, the more exact this is.

Everything you import is filed under this account. Money moving between your own accounts will show up on both — give those a Transfer category so they aren't counted as spending or income.
CSV is read exactly. PDF works if it has selectable text — scanned/image PDFs can't be read automatically, and you'll be told so rather than getting guessed numbers.
